This case study documents a 10-week design exploration conducted in collaboration with the Caltrain administration. The project focused on reimagining navigation as a discovery-driven experience, culminating in a full-feature product concept designed to reposition Caltrain beyond the daily commute.

Goal
How can we increase off-peak Caltrain usage?

With the electrification of Caltrain, the administration sought to move beyond its identity as a commuter line. Historically tied to travel, the system struggled with underuse outside rush hours. Electrification created an opportunity to reposition Caltrain as more than transport.

Problem
Choosing somewhere new requires too much energy and coordination, so they default to the familiar.
User journey
Starting
User follows their usual routine but feels curious about trying something new.
Trying
They consider exploring options but feel too tired or short on time to search.
Conflicting
Decision friction builds, so they default to the familiar to avoid effort.
Quitting
They stick with what's comfortable, but wonder what they might be missing.
Design objectives
How might we make discovering new places feel effortless enough that users choose exploration over habit?
Minimize cognitive effort
Maximize speed
Support low-energy moments
